“Uh, so how does this work, exactly?” I asked as I watched Aeron settle cross-legged on the living room floor. He was about to use his magic to talk to Cassian’s parents, to figure out if they blamed their son for their death. It’d be awful if they did, because it was clear Cassian still blamed himself for it, even though it hadn’t been remotely his fault. What Jai had said was true; his parents should’ve helped him themselves instead of pushing him off to tutors. If anyone was at fault, it was Cassian’s parents.

“I just need to focus and call out to them with my magic. I’ll be thinking about Cassian while I do that. They’ll be more likely to approach me if they know I’m wanting to talk about Cass.”

“Okay, that’s good. What do you need from me?”

Aeron gave me a soft smile. I knew he could probably sense my unease, though he’d refrained from mentioning it, thankfully. I’d meant what I’d said earlier. I trusted Aeron not to use his magic on me unless necessary like with the nightmare, but it still made me antsy. Years of being controlled by others would do that to you, I supposed.

“Nah, I’m good. You can leave if you want. I won’t mind.”

I knew he wouldn’t, but leaving him alone didn’t sit right with me, even if it was just for a few minutes. So, I waved him off and took a seat on the edge of the couch, elbows on my knees and my chin resting on my linked fingers as I watched him close his eyes and take a deep breath.

He seemed to sit like that for a few minutes, his breathing deep and even, before his eyes fluttered open. His light gray gaze focused on something before him, something I couldn’t see, and he nodded.

“Hello, Mr. Romanov. Mrs. Romanov.” My eyes widened, and I looked back at the place he was staring at, but all I could see was the furniture and bare walls.

“Yes, I know your son. He’s a friend of mine.”

Whatever the Romanovs said made Aeron smile, and he shook his head. “No, he lives in Mistvale now. He’s happily bonded, and he just adopted a son.”

The one sided conversation was weird to listen to, but it wasn’t difficult to fill in the gaps.

“I know you must be wondering why I called you here. I wanted to help Cassian get closure, to talk to you for one last time, but before I do that, I needed to ask you a question. Do you blame Cassian for your death?”

Aeron winced, and I moved closer to him, stopping myself from touching him when he waved me off. “It’s okay, Nee. They’re just angry I’d think so.”

He turned back to where the couple supposedly sat and spoke in a soft voice, “I’m glad you don’t blame him, sir. But the thing is, he does. He has blamed himself for it ever since, and it was only recently that he started believing it wasn’t his fault.
